Fire plays a major role in the ecology of tropical ecosystems and can have both beneficial and negative effects. Many ecosystems in the world are fire-dependent and for them fire is essential to maintain their function and their biodiversity. JRC has developed specific tools for monitoring and assessing fire in and around protected areas, and also has developed European and Global indexes of fire risk.
